Call for Proposals - Rhizome Commissions, 2012 – 2013

Rhizome Commissions, 2012 – 2013: Call for Proposals

Deadline Extended to May 1st, 2012

From their website: Founded in 2001, the goal of the Rhizome Commissions Program is to support emerging artists by providing grants for the creation of significant works of new media art. By new media art, we mean projects that creatively engage new and networked technologies and works that reflect on the broader social and political impact of these tools and media in a variety of forms. Rhizome defines emerging artist as artists who exhibit great potential yet are not fully recognized within their field. Commissioned works can take the final form of web-based works, works that engage mobile platforms, performance, video, installation or sound art. Projects can be made for the context of the gallery, the public, the web or networked devices. Rhizome Commissions awards generally range from $1,000 to $5,000.

Rhizome Commissions 2012-2013: Call for Proposals    This year, Rhizome is placing a specific focus on projects geared that address social issues and/or promote individual advancement through education or participation. Our focus is not restricted to this theme, but it is a priority.

Rhizome will award ten grants: eight grants will be determined by a jury of experts in the field, and two will be determined by Rhizome’s membership through an open vote.

Please read all about eligibility, policy and procedures before applying!

Gallery in AZ has a client looking for figurative sculpture

Here is another random request that may be of interest to a figurative sculptor. They do not mention a deadline, but do say that this is a request for an existing piece of work, and not a commission due to time constraints. The TFAA received the email on 4/20.

Xanadu Gallery in Scottsdale AZ is working with a client in Scottsdale who is seeking a sculpture for his entry niche. He has expressed a specific interest in contemporary figurative sculpture, but may entertain other options. The niche measures 57? high and about 36? wide at the base. The sculpture should have a  vertical orientation.

Visit the blog for the full details on this project.
The client has budgeted up to $5,000 for the piece. Please keep in mind that this is the retail amount – after the gallery commission proceeds to the artist would be $3,000.

Also, this must be an existing, available sculpture – our timeline does not allow for casting or creation of the piece.

If you have a piece that might be a candidate for the space please email an image directly: jason@xanadugallery.com. Please keep in mind that the client will be making a selection from the image, so background and image quality are important. Image file should be no more than 6 MB – larger files may be rejected by our email server.
Please include in the body of your email:
Title, Dimensions (h,w,d), Material, and retail price.

If you don't have an appropriate piece but know someone who might, please pass this request along.

Call for Entries - Macro/Micro: Photographic Extremes

©Felice Frankel
Macro/Micro: Photographic Extremes

CALLING FOR SUBMISSIONS
DEADLINE May 2nd 2012 Midnight EST
Juror: Felice Frankel

This exhibit is about two photographic extremes, regardless of what you call them: Micro Photography (AKA Macro Photography) and Macrophotography (AKA Wide Angle Photography) we want to see your best work using these photographic tools. ShareThis

Look it up, Macro (from Greek prefix "makros-" meaning "large"). Most sciences or areas of study use this prefix as defined. Macroeconomics, for example: "dealing with the behavior of the whole economy". Microeconomics: "study of the behavior of small economic units, such as that of individual consumers, opposite of macroeconomics". So what happened with Photography? Commonly, photographers call images of things small and extreme closeups, Macro Photography.

What then is Microphotography? Interestingly, Nikon uses the term Micro for it's close focusing lenses, but not Canon. So, even the manufacturers don't agree.

Microphotography reveals a world unseen by the naked eye. It often exposes patterns and designs that create sublime abstract images. Macrophotography gathers a view often larger and grander than can be gathered with the human eye. Both introduce distortions either through lens characteristics or stitching construction techniques that are creative tools used to produce these distinctive images.

Deadline: May 2nd, 2012

All selected entries are exhibited in our gallery and included in a full color exhibit catalog. Juror's Choice receives a 20x35" vinyl exhibit banner featuring their image. People's Choice gains free entry into a future exhibit. We offer free matting and framing of accepted entries for the duration of each of our exhibition, subject to standard sizes. Photographers set their own prices if they wish to sell their work and retain all rights to their photographs.
