Protecting the Value
April 25, 2012, 7-8:30pm

Gateway Arts Center,
3901 Rhode Island Ave
Brentwood, MD 20722

RSVP to Liz Georges at lgeorges@wpadc.org to attend

WPA presents two days of workshops on one of the thorniest issues facing artists – valuation.

On April 24, Contemporary Wing’s Lauren Gentile will be our guest for Setting the Price, a participatory workshop in which Lauren will discuss her assessment of the proper pricing of artworks presented to her,* allowing attendees to get a glimpse into the factors that affect pricing from the perspective of a gallerist and appraiser who works regularly with collectors and artists.

On April 25, WPA will present Protecting the Value, a discussion moderated by Lisa Gold featuring Helena Lai of Huntington Block Insurance Agency, and Dawn Rogala, a conservator specializing in 19th and 20th century paintings currently serving as a research fellow at the Smithsonian. Discover how the choices you make as an artist about your materials and your business practices can affect how your work retains its value over time.

WPA artist members wishing to submit a work to be reviewed by Lauren Gentile as part of the Setting the Price workshop should email WPA Membership Director Liz Georges at lgeorges@wpadc.org before 5pm on Friday, April 13, 2012 with the title, medium and dimensions of the work. A limited number of works will be selected to be part of the program from the submissions. Those selected will be expected to bring the work with them to the program on April 24, and should be prepared to have Ms. Gentile discuss the work’s potential pricing in front of the audience. Two-dimensional work should be no larger than 48” x 48”. Three-dimensional works should be no larger than 36” x 24” x 24”. Works that are selected will be evaluated for instructional purposes only.

*NOTE: All statements concerning the works reviewed and estimations made at this presentation are verbal estimations of value made for instructional purposes ONLY and cannot be used for any other purpose outside the event, and are invalid after April 24 without a signed document from Ms. Gentile.

Art Leauge's Lecture Series & Enrichment - Critique with Deanna Schwartzberg

Critique with Deanna Schwartzberg
Day:
Tuesday, April 17, 2012
Time:
11:00am - 1:00pm
Location:
The Art League Gallery
Open to anyone interested

Art League instructor Deanna Schwartzberg will give a critique on Tuesday, April 17 from 11:00 am-1:00 pm in the Gallery. Artists can bring two works each to the critique.

About Deanna -

Deanna's interest in abstract painting began with her earliest art experience as an undergraduate at New York University. Later, her years spent studying painting at the Art Students League of New York with Vaclav Vytlacil, who painted with Hans Hofmann, laid the groundwork for her life's work as a painter.

Deanna maintains a studio in Bethesda, MD. Since 2000 she has had solo shows at many galleries in the region including the Parish Gallery, Ozmosis Gallery, Bethesda, Gudelsky Gallery, Maryland College of Art and Design, formerly in Silver Spring, MD, and Glenview Mansion Gallery, Rockville, MD.

Deanna has taught abstract painting at The Art League School for many years. For Deanna, helping an artist shape their personal vision and exploring the painting process with her students energizes her own creative efforts.

Please contact the Gallery to sign up: gallery@theartleague.org, 703-683-1780.

Request for help in destroying a large number of keys

We told you the Torpedo Factory Artist Association gets random requests...here is the latest.

Please contact torpedofactoryartist@gmail.com if you have any need for keys or could help out and we will put you in touch with this local (Herndon, Va) lock company.

"Hello, I work for a public institution in physical security (keys and locks).  I  have an unusual question.  We have been seeking an effective way to securely dispose of a large quantity of keys.  So far this has been a challenge as we need to witness the destruction.  I thought maybe an artist who does metal sculpting might have some ideas on smelting.  Do you have any suggestions?  Do you know of someone in the DC area that casts metal?"

Our events typically draw 70-100 people and we expect a large crowd this year in anticipation of our keynote speaker, Mr. Alex Prud'homme, author of the The Ripple Effect.

Our Daily Bread will be hosting Complete the Circle 2012 will be held on October 21, 2012 in Fairfax City

What is Complete the Circle?
Our Complete the Circle image and event day was intended to promote unity and giving locally with food and staples donations that meet the basic needs of our community members. On the afternoon of Sunday, October 16, Our Daily Bread’s inspirational design (above left) was re-created as a “living painting” on a large field in Fairfax City, with more than 700 community members dressed in our color T-shirts and photographed from 80 feet above by artist Daniel Dancer of Art for the Sky. A celebration with refreshments and live music followed the sky photo shoot, featuring the lively, family-friendly music of Jake Armerding and The Fretful Porcupine.

Participants were asked to bring two or more non-perishable food or pantry items to be incorporated into the sky photo as the outer rim that encircles our living painting -- so that we will all literally “complete the circle” of giving to provide help and hope to local families and children in crisis facing hunger.  You brought almost 3,000 pounds of food. Surpassing our goal by 500 pounds!
